Royal Fragments
A broken pane
can symbolize the real
thing. On this plane
we need reminders—steel
is useful, lead
still carries weight. The heel
of the hero is red
but we call it homicide.
The king was bred
to disregard the tide.
The lion's reign
would end without his pride.
Without a mane
his vanity's in vain.

Common Fragility
Before the pain
can hook him rod and reel,
he takes the plain
old fool's way to steal
from himself. He's led
to believe that he can heal
himself. He read
it more than once inside
a book. He is bread
and he will rise. He's tied
to the horse's rein.
He dreams a needle's pried
his ribs and main-
lines to the heartbreak vein.
